Hardware questions regarding Nikon D5000 (x-post from r/filmmakers)

So the other day I was out shooting some stuff and finally got fed up with the built in mic on the D5000. Did some research into shotgun mics for DSLRs and found out that all of them (at least the ones i found) require a camera with a microphone jack, which the D5000 does not have. I realize the most direct solution is to upgrade my camera since the D5000 is pretty old anyways, but being a freshman college student puts a big damper on my budget. I was wondering if there is any way that I can use a shotgun mic with the D5000 or do I have to upgrade?
