I'm being stingy about bike shoes, what is a good alternative?

I posted long ago on whether to use my beat up skate-shoes versus running shoes and have been using my vans canvas slip-ons for a summer/fall. But after countless twisted ankles and situations where my shoes slip off the pedals or off my feet.. I'm just going to get something different. The elastic on them is all worn out and the sole is pretty slick.

I don't want to pay full price for any 5.10's.. and I've seen them a couple times on chainlove but wasn't ready to buy.

I'm also curious as to the differences between a skate shoe and something like a 5.10? Is it a matter of support/give in mountain bike specific areas of the foot? Should I just stop being stingy? What other shoes have people found success with? I would love to spend under $60.

I'm also planning on getting some new platforms soon.

EDIT: some 5.10's are available for $60 on theclymb right now..
