How do I manually sew a straight line?

Hi Sewitt! I'm a newbie and I don't have a machine but need some tips on how to sew a straight line by hand. It's a 5 inch fringe, basically, but I want to avoid bunching and keep it as elegant as possible. What type of stitch could I use? (Should probably just Google but it's nice to ask actual people!)
