A majority of the comments in the spanking question today fly in the face of research..."A growing body of research has shown that spanking and other forms of physical discipline can pose serious risks to children." What reddit non-science bothers you the most?
I am about to graduate with a BS in Psychology and I've done several papers on the research into spanking and almost everything points to the fact that spanking does not help children in any way. The research in this article summarizes the point that “There is no need for corporal punishment based on the research. We are not giving up an effective technique. We are saying this is a horrible thing that does not work.”
I'm glad that anecdotally some people on reddit were hit and they turned out fine, but I highly doubt that they are as "fine" as they could have been had they not been dealt corporal punishment in favor of positive reinforcement. Maybe there are some kids who need to be spanked to get the point across but that minority lies is .1% of children.
This sums up my point: “I can just about count on one hand the studies that have found anything positive about physical punishment and hundreds that have been negative.” People on reddit who spank their kids or think of it as something that should be done are akin to climate change deniers.
Has there been anything else this week that I read in askreddit that was just patently false?
