An Introverted Volunteer.
For the past year and a bit, I've been a volunteer with a charity that helps disabled kids and teenagers participate in or do activities that we would take for granted e.g. trampolining or football (soccer). I go to the gym with a teenager who's quite severely autistic. This mainly involves me helping him focus on doing whatever activity he wants to do, like rowing on the rowing machine. I just got back from the charities Christmas party. I went in with less than exuberant expectations. I went last year and it just meh as you'd expect. Just disabled kids with their volunteers for two hours doing things like colouring or watching a clown/magician for an hour (awful by the way). As I observed the other volunteers whilst my guy was asking his usual questions that he asks everyone (he has quite obsessive habits) to a quite pretty volunteer, I noticed that a lot if not all of them were quite extroverted, laughing and seemingly having a good time with their respective children. I felt kinda disheartened by this. Perhaps being introverted has affected the way I formed a "bond" with my guy. I did learn very quickly when I started however, that with him, when trying to gestures of try asking him questions, he won't respond, so I stopped trying to do that. But then I question whether I'm having any effect on him. Maybe introverts don't make the best volunteers in this field.
But anyways, my time as a volunteer with the charity is coming to an end in a few weeks so I shouldn't be worrying and I'm gonna see on of my favourite bands with a friend later so that will cheer me up.
I just felt like sharing and I was interested whether you guys have any experience in volunteering.
