I am 15 years old (16 in 2 weeks), and I want to cut off my parents. Does this make me an ungrateful brat as everyone seems to make out?

I want to cut off contact from my parents as soon as possible. They have been physically and mentally abusive to me my entire life, and for years, I believe that this was normal, typical behavior in your average American family. However, as I read about how families usually are on reddit, I have learned that it is not.

Here are some examples of physical abusive I have experienced in the past:

  • When I was 7, my father attempted to drown me in a tub of water out of anger.

  • When I was 10, my father punished me by hitting a hammer repeatedly to the head until I was knocked out unconscious with a minor brain injury that never got hospitalized.

  • Whenever he gets in a fight with his girlfriend, he lets off his anger by stomping on my head.

  • About a few weeks ago, last Thanksgiving to be exact, he became angry after a breakup with his girlfriend, and grabs the back of my head and repeatedly slams it against a sink. This results in a minor brain injury and a large cut that requires stitches. I have yet to been hospitalized.

Mental abuse:

  • Despite my high standardized test scores and 4.0 GPA (in both my high school AP and community college courses) in which I try my absolute hardest to achieve, he constantly calls me a "dumb, lazy, uneducated, future lifelong McDonald's employee." No matter how hard I try academically, I will never be good enough.

  • He has told me multiple times that I am a waste of life and that I should go kill myself.

  • From ages 8-12 I was slightly chunky, but not serious. During this time, I was regularly called a fat-ass, which lead to me getting an eating-disorder where I would practice bulimia and attempt to starve myself to get thinner. I am no longer overweight, in fact I have a BMI of 16.5, but still to this day, I hate my body.

  • He has slut-shamed me despite the fact I am a virgin.

Yet even when I mention that I will cut contact off from my father, people see me as an ungrateful brat. They say, "family is family, and you'll always need one," but the thing is, I did not choose my father. I do not feel that I should continue to contact someone that is mean to me just because I share their bloodline. I also feel that is unfair that I am judged so harshly if I choose to not contact them.

EDIT: How in the hell did this get down voted into oblivion, but something like "tom cruise" gets around 2k up votes? God, this I am very close to the edge of killing myself.
