Islamic Design: Can you help me understand what I've made?
I have been working all semester on this copper plate in my printmaking class. I should say that I do not practice Islam, but I do have great respect for the tradition.
I made this plate to explore the Islamic culture and to attempt to find a foothold in the Islamic religious cosmology from which I could further explore the religion. I absolutely love these designs.
I'll cut to the chase. I made this design based on the numbers 7 and 19, Unnatural numbers which I understand have significance in the islamic world. I was curious if anyone here could help me understand why these numbers might be significant so that as I develop the plate further I can make a more "correct" use of them. From what I can tell, these types of designs are often put in burial sites for great thinkers. I was first inspired by the ceiling of the tomb of Hafez. Are these designs generally associated with death?
While I was creating it, the work was very meditative. I began to treat it as an act of contemplation. I've read a very small amount of work from Shahab al-Din Suhrawardi who says that we are all imperfect reflections of a divine and pure light. I can see the relation from that work into my own, in that all the designs reflect and rotate from a single central point. Is the creation of these necessarily related to Suhrawardi's thought?
Thank you for any help. Please don't cross post my picture to any other sub-reddits, as it is not complete and I don't really want people in r/pics or r/art to see it. :D
