Possible [spoilers] from last week's episode... quick question

How did Merle know that Maggie's a "farmer's daughter"? They didn't seem like they wanted to do much talking, but they're calling her bo peep... couldn't she be just any other girl in the apocalypse? Why is she so obviously the farmer's daughter to strangers?
