I want to start a non-profit with a really specific and (I think) admirable goal, but I've never really done anything like this before. To make things worse, the scope of this project is worldwide, and would involve legal negotiation with many countries. Where do I start? What can I expect?
Thinking about the (always) escalating tension in Israel/Palestine, it occurred to me that there are probably lots of people and families that were simply born into that mess and who don't really care about the history of the land itself, religion, or past atrocities inflicted upon their ancestors. They're simply stuck there, watching their friends and family die senselessly, and would gladly move away and live peacefully if given the chance. I want to start an international ferry service that finds host countries that are willing to give these people refugee status and set them up with housing, jobs, stipends, paths to citizenship, etc.
Would this even be legally possible? Would any countries take these people? Is this goal outrageous?
