I want to get back into the Pokemon universe!

So, the last game I played was one of the original versions way back in 1998ish but for some reason I feel motivated to play through as many Pokemon games as I can!

I have a DS and a 3DS...which generations/versions should I completely avoid and which ones are a must-play?
