Can you splice together two videos of different resolutions (e.g. 640x480 and 1184x720) and end up with a video with two different resolutions?

FCP seems to insist upon making the resolution of the final video that of the video with the lowest resolution (e.g. if you splice together two clips, one at 640 and the other at 1184, the resulting video's resolution will be 640x480). Is there anyway to make it so that this isn't the case?

I have two videos I want to cut together, one is 640x480, the other is a much higher resolution, and in the finished video I'd simply like the part that comes from the 640 clip to play at 640 and then when it transitions to the higher-res clip I would like it to play at a higher resolution...is this possible? That is, going from a lower to a higher resolution all in one video because the clips that make up that video were at different resolutions?

If not, I'm going to have to go buy a new camcorder (shit).

Sorry if I'm not explaining this well. Thank you in advance for any help.
