Hairdressers of Reddit, what is the best way to get what I want out of a haircut?

I want to go get a haircut for the first time in 4 years, but I'm scared that the hairdresser will end up cutting off more than what I want off since my hair is fairly long at took a while to get there. So, what do you recommend so that my haircut comes out the way I want it to?
