Hey r/dogs, do you have any tips for dealing with an adopted/rescue dog

So my brother-in-law happened upon a dog owner who really disliked having her dog. He was somewhat neglected, and the owner said she was considering letting him loose on the streets. He told me about it, and I insisted that he at least offered to give him a good home. The owner agreed and now the dog is living with me and my roommates.

This dog is adorable, and from what I can tell he is a beagle and Bassett hound mix. The previous owner said he was a year old, but I don't know of that is completely true. He seems to be in very good health other than a dime-sized sore near a front leg. He seems very well-behaved, but he is not neutered or housebroken.

I've grown up having dogs with my parents, but I've never been in a situation quite like this. My roommates and I love animals so much, and we can already tell this dog has the potential to be a great fit. We have plenty of room in the house for him, and he will get plenty of walks and exercise.

Do you have any advice for dealing with adopted dogs? any crucial things to look out for? I really want the best for this dog. He deserves a lot of love, especially after the situation he came from.
