Hey, historians. What are some stages of history that would have drastically changed had one tiny detail be altered? i'll get the ball rolling.
in 1926, During the early years of his rise to power, the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini survived an assassination attempt by Violet Gibson, who had fired at Mussolini three times while he sat in his car, with one shot grazing the bridge of his nose. Gibson had no apparent reason for the attempt, and was deemed insane and deported.
If the shot that made contact had been moved two or three inches, Mussolini would have been killed before he became dictator of Italy, and the country's involvement in WWII might have been very different.
So historians, what near misses and wild coincidences do you have?
