Please forgive our Manziel obnoxiousness, we are rednecks with new money
I posted this elsewhere to second tamuowen's comment, but I wanted others to see in case it got buried.
Try to have a little mercy on our fan base. I know it's annoying, and there is little excuse, but let me try to give you a little insight into our pathology...
After a pretty good finish in the Southwest Conference (conference champs in 1991-1993), we moved into Big 12 in 1996. This move was really exciting for us. We went from playing only Texas teams (Arkansas left in '92) to playing teams like Nebraska, Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas State, and Oklahoma State. We were juiced; finally our chance to show our stuff on the national stage. Yeah, we kind of felt we tagged along on Texas' coattails, but we were in the BIG TWELVE. We had arrived.
Things weren't bad at first. We finished at #20 in '97, won the conference championship in '98 and landed at #11, and squeaked into the polls at #23 in '99. Yeah, we lost all three of our bowl games, but we were on the rise.
Then it was shit. 7-5, 8-4, 6-6 (Fire Slocum/Hire Fran), 4-8, 7-5, 5-6, 9-4, 7-6 (Fire Fran/Hire Sherman), 4-8, 6-7, 9-4, 7-6 (Fire Sherman/Hire Sumlin).
During our last 12 years in the Big 12 we were 45-51 (.47) in conference play, were 2-6 in bowls (won the fucking galleryfurniture.com and Meineke car care bowls), and had one of the most painful seasons ever when in 2011 we went from 6-2 to 3-5 in conference play after giving away every fucking lead we had at halftime.
So here comes the SEC and all the talk about how, again, we will be in over our heads. We have a new coach, a new offense, and a new conference. People are generally talking about us like we are that skinny but lovable nerd that shows up in the moves to join the team. "Nice guy, good heart, cute that he's trying, maybe in 5-6 years he will complete".
But then the movie actually took the usual twist, and the nerd starting kicking ass. People were actually talking about us in positive terms. The SEC fans were incredibly welcoming, we played Florida and LSU tight, and our quarterback was a freak of nature. We stopped giving away games at halftime and life was great.
And then we beat Alabama. At home. When they were ranked #1. People talked about our quarterback for the Heisman. OUR QUARTERBACK? TEXAS A&M'S QUARTERBACK? WHAT. THE. FUCK!? That was it, the final domino to fall, the circlejerk was largely unavoidable.
We are rednecks with new money. Asssholes who used to spend our nights drinking beer at the Dixie Chicken, drowning our sorrows after losing to Arkansas State or yet another Big 12 opponent. Suddenly, we have won the Powerball, and we took a lump sum of 38.3 million dollars home to the shanty. Not knowing what to do with our success, we have our overalls on in the finest steak restaurant in town, feet propped on the table, asking for another case of "that Don Per-rig-none shit".
Give us time. We will likely blow this prize by buying tons of shit on QVC and betting on greyhounds, but then again, we just might become civilized. To quote a famous football admonition, we will learn to deal with success as if "it isn't the first fuckin' time we've been in the end zone".
Thank you CFB for all the love over the past season. We will come down off our high soon, and we love to be friends once we regain our collective minds.
TL;DR We don't know what to do with our hands, so we are circle jerking.
