Stream of consciousness-style descriptive writing to get some stuff off my chest, ex-post with minor edits from r/readmystory (wrong place)

Whenever she was around him she became awkward and over reactive. Eye contact seemed more intense than with anyone else and sometimes she thought of Tammy when this happened and felt guilty. Still, she was almost sure that the intensity was imagined, merely a result of her persistent and thoroughly annoying infatuation. Logic told her to ignore it, being single was too much fun after a year and a half of stifling, strictly adhered-to monogamy. And besides, his teeth were a bit crooked, he was much too prideful and his self-deprecating and staged unhappiness made him an immature and unattractive mate. Instead he was just a good friend, as much as you could expect between two people with a brief and in her opinion unfinished (or more accurately, still needing closure) sexual history.
She started dating Dennis about a month after their fizzled courtship, if you could even call it that. The relationship was enough for a while and really she had little to complain about. In the end after more than a year together they got sick of each other before either was ready to admit it;a few months of buried antagonism at one other finally lent her the resolve to end it in what she suspected was a who-breaks-up-with-who-first scenario anyway.
Through that he, the he who inexplicably stirred something small in her breast whenever she saw him, remained in their circle of friends and they got along at an amiable distance. There had been moments, unexpected and embarrassing, when he crept into her thoughts at night as she lay beside Dennis. He and Tammy took up with each other right as the split with Dennis was happening, and after six months were seemingly still going strong.
Being single was fantastic and couldn't have come at a more perfect time. She was almost completely independent in her life now; her schedule no longer relied on someone fickle and often late and she didn't have to answer to anyone about her choices. At the same time she moved out of her parent’s house for good rather than just during school semesters and at last had the money to run her own life and end the blackmail of financial need dependent on them. She had no intention to tie herself down in any way and was not at all willing to trade in her sexual promiscuity for a single partner.
Short of these restrictions there wasn't much of a future she could share with him, and the point was probably moot anyway. Even if he hadn’t started dating right as she became available, she doubted anything significant would have come of it, if his indecisiveness of the past was any indication. They were only alone a handful of times since their very brief and complicated flame had extinguished that the two were ever alone together. These were never arranged, rather happenstance occasions when they hung out as a group and the other members were out of the room, or when he accompanied her for safety’s sake on the walk home from a late night party. Among this small number of private moments were even rarer occasions when he seemed almost on the verge of saying something, but somehow they were always interrupted before being interrupted and she knew better than to push him by bringing it up. She often wondered what he would say, and what was holding him back.
There’s nothing she can do about it, really. Sometimes that’s just how things work out, like a broken bone healed in the wrong position that is too late to reset. He told her back then the sex hadn't sparked deeper feeling in him and she had respected that and moved on as best she could. But even after this, something she couldn’t quite place her finger on remained.
It seemed to her he was forcing an even greater distance between the two of them since Tammy had come into his life, in spite of the fact that the women got along swimmingly and enjoyed each other's company. The phrase “methinks he doth protest too much” often popped into her head. She wondered if he was going through what she had experienced with Dennis, the passing misgivings and what-ifs still circling his head after twice their opportunity had passed. But she could never be sure of anything with him.
It wasn’t enough for her to invest her heart and time into. She knew what she would look for in the next boyfriend, and mystery and emotional blockage were not on the list. The longing for him was nothing more now than an infected splinter in her heart that she could never seem to coax out. She was frustrated with herself and, ashamedly, frustrated with him as well.
Would there ever be an ending, a chance to resolve? It seemed more likely that their possibly imagined limbo would outlast their friendship. The day was inevitably coming when they would lose touch and drift apart and the pace of life would sweep them ever forward and away from feelings trapped in the past.
