Why is Australia more commonly filled with marsupials, and less abundant with placental animals, than other continents?

I know it was something like they had less predators when they were split off from other continents, but why was that a cause for a rise in marsupials and fall for placental animals? Also as a bonus, why are monotremes almost entirely found in Australia.
