Arriving to Mumbai on December 9th. Where should I stay?

Should I book in advance or just show up and ask taxi driver? Any ideas? My experience with places like Thailand is all the online bookings are expensive, but if you just show up you find nice places for $20 a night that are clean, etc. Any ideas? Thank you so much!
