Why was the Asian Steppe such a center for human migration?

Many groups that ended up in Eurasia and the Americas seem to have originated in the Asian Steppe. That seems to be why we have this whole "Indo-European" groups, the Native Americans also originated there. Why did humans go there before migrating elsewhere? What is so attractive about the area?
