[Troubleshooting] Can I crossfire these two cards?
So my dad asked me if he could get me anything for my computer for christmas. At first I thought a sound card might make for a neat addition seeing as I produce a little music but I decided against that due the fact that I don't exactly have the speaker set up to get any benefit out of it. Next I thought a raid card and another harddrive might be neat and something I've never done before; again after a little thought and poking around I don't think I'd get a huge benefit out of that either seeing has my case already has about 2 tbs and I'm only using about 300 gbs of that.
Finally I came to adding a second video card; I like to game and have noticed it sometimes hangs on the framerate in certain games. I have a ASUS Radeon HD 7850 and thought I might as well crossfire now since the opportunity is there and the price has dropped since I built (~1 year). The actual part number is "HD7850-DC2-2GD5". I directed my father to that card via PCPartpicker and just sort of left it open ended as to whether or not he would go through with it (I implied that if he thought it was out of his range that was perfectly fine).
I just got an email from him asking if an extremely similar card from ASUS would work. It's an ASUS Radeon HD 7850 v2 whose part number is the same except for the v2 label. "HD7850-DC2-2GD5-V2".
I was just wondering if these two cards would work together in crossfire or are we just throwing money away?
TL;DR Will two video cards that have the same chipset but different specs crossfire.
