A few insurance questions after an auto accident

Hello and thank you in advance to my fellow redditors. I live in Michigan. My wife and son were in an accident this Friday where a 19 year old female ran into the back of our 03 odyssey, smashing the back of it. She was probably texting, though claims that her brakes gave out. I don't think so.. but whatever. My wife has nasty whiplash, son is OK. (He's 2 years old & basically rubber).

So, this van was great for us. Honda replaced the transmission with a brand NEW one at 100k miles, we just put in $1400 to repair the sliding doors, just got the remote starter fixed.

  • If they declare this a total loss, does the insurance provider take those things into consideration when determining payout value? New trans, etc.
  • If your van was hit and there was damage to the frame, would you hope that it was declared a total or would you feel comfortable with your family back in the same vehicle?
  • Any advice as to handle getting into a new-to-us vehicle ASAP? We have a big family and our only other car is very small, so I need to get something pretty soon. We don't car rental insurance but we are getting a loaner vehicle from family for a little while so we are lucky in that sense.

Advice appreciated. Thank you!

Edit: adjusted some details after letting wife read post :P
