Are glasses for 3D TV proprietary or universal?

I'm going to purchase extra 3D glasses as a gift for a friend. Do I need to get glasses specifically for the make/model of 3DTV he has? Or are they all interchangeable?

EDIT: I've found out since that the specific TV is this:

Panasonic VIERA TC-P42ST30 42-Inch 1080p 3D Plasma HDTV

Given that info, would I need to be looking for product-specific glasses, or would the PS3 glasses work? If either would work, would there be any benefit to one over the other? Thanks!
