Is it possible to get loose curls/waves from a perm?

I have long, straight, fine hair and would love to get loose curls from a perm to add body to my hair. I'm afraid that the only result will be really right curls and ill be stuck hating it. Does anyone have experience with this? Would you suggest it or not?
