Why do things become radioactive when exposed to gamma rays?

Why do things continue to emit harmful frequencies after they've been exposed? Why don't I emit UV rays after I've been in the sun for a long time? Or why don't I emit visible light after I've been exposed? What makes Gamma Rays so special?
