Question concerning stars in later stages of evolution

I'm in an introductory astronomy course in my first year of college, and this question occurred to me: once a star leaves the main sequence, could the introduction of more matter (hydrogen I believe would be the appropriate element) bring a star back onto the main sequence for more than a short period?
