Hey /r/AndroidQuestions, help me pick out an Android based phone for a gift

Hey all, new to this /r/ and also new to the Android platform. I am looking for some advice on getting an Android based phone for my son for a holiday gift.

It must be for Verizon (CDMA) as we are trying to replace an existing phone that barely works, and we're in the middle of the stupid contract. So I suppose an unlocked phone that works on CDMA would be good. Either that, or if someone has experience with (or works for) Verizon Wireless can recommend how to approach the situation and get them to sell us a subsidized phone in the middle of a contract that would be cool.

A brand spanking new phone would be ideal, but I suppose a (recent model) used phone in like new condition would be OK. I've had good luck in the past with used phones on eBay.

Two things he mentioned to me: RAZR and Milestone... pleading ignorance here.

Also, what Android version should I try and target / avoid?
