In a new city, having trouble meeting friends. Finally get invited to a party, get blackout drunk, and slap a guy. I've never done this before, and I take full responsibility for that action. What can I do (if anything) to ensure that I didn't dig my own social grave?
New to my town, and came here not really knowing anyone. It's been a struggle to make friends.
Last Saturday, I was drinking beers all day (I don't usually do this, it was a result of having no plans) and get invited to a party that is at like 10 PMish. I go, and after about 10:30, I don't recall a single thing. I wake up in my bed on Sunday morning and go about my day.
I notice some funny behavior towards me in the following week, and wondering if something bad happened. Last night, my roommate goes to a party where my name comes up. Apparently, I requested the guy DJing the party shut the music off, insulting him, and then smacked him across the face when he didn't turn off the music.
I feel so ashamed and embarrassed at myself. I have never done anything like this before, no history of violence or blackout drunkenness, so this is scary and made me instantly decide to stop drinking for a while. I was actually toying with the idea lately, and this news is the last nail in the coffin.
Now it makes sense why I did not get invited to their second party. I fear that my reputation is tarnished, and I've dug my own social grave, as lots of people were at this party (when I got there, anyway) and lots probably saw the fight and the drama.
Besides 1. refraining from alcohol and 2. expecting to never be invited over by these people again, what should I do? Can I do? Would you do? I don't know these people very well, and now probably never will, so my gut tells me that a long apology to these people and how I plan on cutting back on my drinking seems like a weird thing to do, so it's best to cut my losses and move on, focus on other people socially and look to make friends in new places.
I'm appalled at myself for doing this. But I will deal with that on my own and learn from it. I'd like to know how to minimize social blowback/what steps I could take to possibly restore my (very new) reputation here. And if it's ruined with this group of people, that sucks, but I am able to work and eventually accept that.
TL;DR: Got drunk at a party, slapped a guy. Feel terrible about it, and wondering if there is anything I could or should do to make things right.
