My car was broken into last night, I came out at just the right time
Last night I had gotten home from the gym around 11:00pm, I head inside and do my normal routine of making a protein shake and chatting with my roomies. Shortly after I wanted to go on reddit, but realized I had left my phone in the car, so I head outside to grab it. We share our driveway with two other houses, so parking in the actual driveway isn't an option, but we have a small dirt patch to the left of the driveway that can fit four cars, when I get there I realize that my passenger window had been smashed in. Fuck.
This is the second time since I've lived here that someone has broken into my car, the first time someone smashed the rear window, passenger window, and popped the frontleft tire, but didn't take anything, this happened around 10:00pm. Needless to say I was pretty heated, why the fuck does it have to be my car that people break into. Anyway, this time they did steal something from my car, my ZuneHD. I was hugely disappointed and yelled my fair share of "fuck-shit-fucks." I call my mom to ask her what I should do about filing a police report and what not, and after about 5 minutes of talking to her I hear a car alarm go off around the corner.
This guy starts walking towards me from around the corner, hood up, head down; I am suspicious. I approach him and ask "Hey do you know anything about that car alarm?" to which he responds "I don't know nothin' man," he increases his pace and responds similarly to my question of "did you break into my fucking car man?"
At this point he starts to run away, this is as good as an admission of guilt to me, so I grab him before he can get very far. We struggle for a bit, the whole time with him telling me to let him go because he didn't do anything, bull-fucking-shit then why are you running man? My roommate came out with me initially to check on my car and it was at this point that I was yelling at him to call the cops, he didn't have his phone on him, so he tried to use my phone (which I dropped while talking with my mom, who was still on the line, probably scared shitless), but he doesn't have a smartphone so he didn't know what to do; he ran inside and called the cops from there.
I am a little winded from struggling with this guy, having just gone to the gym (leg day) didn't help much either. I then feel him reaching into his pocket for something, I get worried that it might be a knife so I keep close attention to his left hand. When it comes out into plain sight my intuition proved correct; he procured a drawn 3.5-4" blade.
My fight-or-flight instinct kicks in, I choose fight. I hit his left hand with my right as hard as I could, causing him to drop the knife. He begins groping for the knife and I quickly kick it away into a puddle. I then hug him with all my might in what was to be my greatest bear-hug yet, I am 6'7", he cannot escape me. Unfortunately I am fairly winded at this point, I don't want this fucker to get away because I knew he had broken into my car and stolen my shit. I see someone walking up to us and realize that it is my roommate coming home from the bars, he looks confused and asks me if I need any help, to which I respond "Yea this guy tried to fucking stab me."
We manage to get him up against our neighbors fence, which I reach over to grab the wood on the other side for leverage to keep this guy immobile. The dude then starts ridding himself of his possessions, a small, black, metal, cylindrical looking thing which I later find out to be a flashlight (I assume he used that to break into the cars), and a plastic bag with some weed and a pipe in it. The cops show up a minute later and detain the suspect and start taking stories, I tell them everything and they take him away.
Later that night I was bagging up my window with the help of my roommates since I sustained minor injuries on my right wrist from using my fence technique, when the cop I talked to prior shows up again. He asks me to describe my mp3 player that I had told them was stolen from my car, I say "It's small, black, one button on the front, touchscreen, ZuneHD," he asks me to describe the back, "There's a wave design with the text 'Whatever happens, happens' (thanks Spike) ironically enough." He then gives me back my Zune, says the guy is getting three felony charges, and recommends I don't do anything like this again.
Justice was served.
tl;dr
Go out to the car to grab my phone, car is broken into, see suspicious guy, grab him, he tries to stab me, I say fuck that, he goes to jail.

Here's some pictures I took of the damage to the car and myself, if anyone is interested
