Looking for good reference material on classical greek society.

I'm currently writing a novel with a society losely based upon that of the classical/hellenistic greeks and, as per the title, i'm after some good reference material. Primarily im looking for details like population density and spread, overviews of the different political systems, technological levels (especially medical) and some information on the architechture (both of the poor and rich). Any books you can suggest or any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. I have no intention of becoming an expert but I really want a good base from which I can then modify and change to suit the needs of the world I am creating.
