Question regarding getting on a scripted union show

I've been wondering about the effective ways of obtaining a PA gig on a union show.

I've met a couple of people so far who ended up on one of these sets after working in an office for one of the major networks. Is this the best way?

Does anyone here have an experience to share about how they landed the job?
