Any lawyers out there from Canada (specifically Saskatchewan) who can help a brother out?
So I've run into a bit of a stupid situation with my previous landlord, also previously one of my good friends. When I moved out I waited till about a week before the end of the month to tell her because I was terrified of how she'd react (she has a tendency to blow up). Anyway I owed her about $600 at the time for missed rent and utilities, but I'd just landed a full time, decent paying, job so I told her I'd pay her. She decided to add an extra $600 to my debt. I pay her $600, over the course of a few weeks, when she flips out and demands $300 a pay cheque or she'll charge me an extra $50 every two weeks. Her interest rates were part of the reason why I was so in debt. I tell her I can't afford that as my cheques are usually around $800, and my rent is also $800. Plus I have to eat, buy insulin, pay bills, et cetera. She refuses my $100 every two weeks compromise, and says I have to pay her $300. Essentially I tell her I won't pay her at all, because I felt like she was taking advantage of me, and I didn't like being treated like that. Now she says she is going to take me to small claims court and fuck me hard. I sent her a fairly heartfelt apology while drunk the other night, but she pretty much threw it back in my face. What I would like to know is if she actually has any case against me. We signed no renters agreement, she never gave me a receipt for rent, and I'm fairly certain she never claimed any of the money she made off of her tenants on her taxes. I would have rather settled this between us, but she says she wants the $600 by Friday, or she's getting the ball rolling on small claims. Giving her the money would severely screw me over for the month.
