Why did it have to be about the end of the world? (Spoilers)

I loved AC and AC2. They were great games, cool concept, crazy Da Vinchi Code-esque story about how the Assassins and Templars never stopped fighting. It was cool. One of the reasons why I loved the series was the idea that I was eventually going to play as a modern day assassin, which was gonna be fucking awesome. Murdering politicians, corrupt businessmen, etc. All while being Desmond, a character who wouldn't be a stupid bitch. And it would be great.

And then AC2's ending happened.

Now, don't get me wrong. The ending was still pretty cool. But if I had to pick and exact point where the writers fucked the series, it was that point. Because from ACB through the finale, the games were no longer about "modern day Assassins vs Templars", it was about the end of the world and weird god like people from like 10000 years ago.

See, AC was all about Desmond learning about the Assassins, their history, their creed, etc. And then AC2 was all about learning how to be an Assassin, how they fight, how they sneak and move. But after AC2, it stopped being about the Templars. It stopped being about the ongoing hidden war in history. In Brotherhood, the modern day plot is only "Go through these memories to find out where the apple is. And that's it. No learning anything, no becoming an Assassin. Just find the apple. Revelations is even worse, it's plot is "Your in a coma, go through memories and you'll wake up." You get nothing out of it except being Ezio for another 6 hours.

Then AC3 happens, and by then the Templars are so not involved it's like they don't even matter. It's all about stopping the end of the world, and to do that you have to go through a shit ton of memories to find a fucking necklace that opens a door to an ending almost as shitty as Mass Effect 3's.

I didn't want to save the world or change how everything works. I wanted to be an Assassin. I wanted to kill some fucking Templars. I wanted a side story where Desmond is struggling not to succumb to the bleeding effect. I wanted to have some actual character development happen. I wanted to fuck Lucy, god dammit. But no, instead I got to "save the world" by doing almost nothing at all.

So yeah, those are my thoughts. What do you guys think? Do you think it should have stuck with the Assassins vs Templars, or gone along the bullshit end of the world plot?
