You can still see your text message conversation even if the text you're typing takes up the whole screen!

Like many others, I thought there was no way around this, I would just cut the text, read what I had to read, and then paste it and continue typing. Simply drag down from the contact name ("Group Message" if you're in a group chat) and the box in which you are typing should collapse. Hope this helps someone.
