Classic literature suggestions

I have recently discovered an interest in classics and some recomendations would be more than welcome (particularly with Christmas coming up). What are your favourites?

Edit: Thankyou everyone, these are some great suggestions. (And just for the record, I love Frankenstein and it's what has made me pursue what was previously just a vague curiosity. That and Tess of the D'Urbevilles)
