What is the evolution behind different eye colors?

Why colors at all and how did brown gain allelic dominance over other colors? I know the colors all have their own spectrum of light to dark, but are there any rare inherited eye colors besides the common brown, gray, green, blue, and yellow (Not talking about discoloration due to disease or pink eyes in albino individuals), did colors like orange or purple ever exist naturally?
