A lot of new lifters don't seem to understand the correlation between muscle weight gained and size, or have realistic expectations about how quickly a certain amount of muscle can be put on. Here is an image (and video) to provide some perspective.
As the caption says, this is 25lbs of muscle gained (their own words) over the course of 3 years. This is considered pretty solid progress and averages out to about 8 lbs of muscle per year. The corresponding video can be found here. Remember: the natural limit of muscle gain is roughly 2lbs per month, MAXIMUM, and that decreases as one's mass gains increase.
