Kidney stone pain for the past few days, doctor appointment time!
No, really, this belongs in r/transpositive.
I know trans folks have their share of horror stories when trying to get medical care (and I know I already have one of those under my belt). And sometimes I think that our support venues tend to emphasize the bad over the good. So I wanted to take the time and post here to give credit when things went really well.
I've been having pain from a kidney stone since Wednesday. I went to my old urologist on Friday morning, and it was my first time "back" post-transition, since my previous bout of kidney stones three years ago and (heh, heh) my vasectomy. My wife set up the appointment and told them about my name and gender change.
From the minute I signed in to the time I walked out with my prescriptions, the staff and medical professionals treated me wonderfully. No yelling out the wrong name in the waiting room, no confusion over names or records -- the manager knew I was coming in and helped "transition" my old patient records into a file with my new name, etc. Even said "let me take a new picture for your chart".
And as far as patient care goes, the x-ray tech, nurse and doc were fine and my trans status didn't ever come up, even after I stammered "uh, not applicable" when the x-ray tech asked me when my last period was.
Sometimes I think it's easy to be overwhelmed with all of the horror stories out there. I've had a smooth transition and almost all of my experiences (even the ones involving kidney stone pain) have gone well.
(On Wednesday at the urgent care center, things went fine, too. I probably could have been stealth -- when taking my history the nurse was momentarily very confused when I mentioned my vasectomy as a surgery I've had, but the nurse moved on without commenting further.)
