Airplay and Itunes 11 on Late 2008 Macbook Unibody...

So, I was under the impression that Airplay would not work on my Late 2008 MB unibody running Mountain Lion. However, I just updated to Itunes 11 and am now able to stream using airplay (through the itunes app only). Can anyone explain why this is possible?
