Expanding transit - Is the ASR 1002-x a good fit for the enclosed design?
I'm about to completely overhaul our transit and at the same time provide 'direct' service access to a couple of 3rd parties in a design roughly similar to this;
My intention is to utilise the Cisco ASR 1002-x series as Routers 1 and 2 but I'm wondering as to whether I should plan ahead for additional third parties / additional carriers at the POP end (more about diversity than throughput) and to this end I have a few questions if people wouldn't mind giving some advice;
- Has anyone worked with the ASR 1002-x's and do you have any reservations about them?
- Even if you haven't worked with them are they a good fit for this design? (~2Gb of traffic, BGP, terminating some fibres (20km) for transit).
- I can't make my mind up as to whether Router3 should be a larger ASR with more SPA's, a 6503-E (lots of Gig ports!) or an ASR with a 10Gb card linked to a 6503-E (best of both worlds).
My reasons for choosing the ASR1002-x;
- Cisco house - it's what I know specifically 6500's (7200, 2928 & 4948's etc etc)
- Max rated throughput is higher than our planned utilisation for the next 24 - 36 months (36Gbs - granted needs to be 'unlocked')
- Chassis supports 6 SFPs out of the box and upto 21 with extra SPAs
- Cheap (Juniper stuff is probably cheaper but that's a learning curve we can't afford the time on)
- It's that or the 6500-E according to this page ;)
