Advice for "gingered" beer?

I'm looking into brewing my second batch of beer, and hoping to do something with ginger. I like ginger a lot, and haven't read anything negative about its addition to beer, but have never actually tried any beer that has ginger in it. I'm curious what other people have tried, and what they found successful. There's all sorts of conflicting advice about how much ginger to add, and at what point, so I was hoping to find some answers. I'm also considering lemon or orange zest, but I might wait to see how the beer turns out with just the ginger. Right now I'm trying to go for something lighter (I've got a "light" malt extract with a "pale" kicker) and pretty light on hops (I think they'll distract from the ginger). I'd like to keep a little of the ginger bite, but don't want it to overwhelm the beer.
