Mind Giving Me A Little Help?

So I want to start writing a sci-fi story, but I want to add a bit of realism to it. Is there any advice anyone can give me on how to realistically make the world? Is there any little thing I should look out for that add realism (like maybe sicknesses, who knows maybe landing on an alien planet might just kill us) ect.
