Asbestos advice: Popcorn ceiling removal in Mexico (Home built 1995-1998)
Hi everyone. I'm from Mexico and in the process of diy home remodeling in order to move in. My main concern is regarding the removal of popcorn ceiling. Without any consideration (ignorance) I started wetting and scraping popcorn ceiling in some rooms (still some rooms left). After that I started to learn about asbestos and the possible exposure I got. Obviously I got really concerned. The popcorn ceiling fell on old carpet that I planned to remove anyway and on cement floor. However some furniture that I plan to keep was also exposed in the process.
The house is not inhabited, just me getting there to do remodeling some days. The plan is to put new floor, clean and paint everything. I've been told that the house was built around 1995 - 1998, and although it was built in Mexico the construction materials were from the U.S.
I've been reading posts in this subreddit and looking for advice. I know that is best to test the material in a certified lab and hire an asbestos abatement service (if the results are positive). The problem is that here in Mexico there isn't much awareness about asbestos, and thus I haven't been able to find solutions for this situations (lab testing and abatement). I know that given the date of construction of the house the probability of asbestos goes down but still I'm concerned.
I'm thinking about buying Hepa air purifiers, doing some wet deep cleaning and then painting but hoping to get some orientation and advice on how to best manage this situation.
Thanks.
