S@K BTL - is this normal?! advice - Kohls mgmt
I’m sitting here stressing: recently opened my own store as a BTL for a new S@K. Other BTLs are able to make their own schedules and participate in the hiring process, apparently: well, not me. The Kohls store manager has retained all that power for himself. Unfortunately, he is also tends to be dismissive and relatively uninterested in anything I have to say to rectify the problems I already spot with scheduling and getting everyone up to speed, too.
To be fair, I know he only has a small amount of hours each week. I don’t have an ops and sales lead: there are just 2 full time employees, myself and a younger girl. so you’d think he’d split us so someone works with the girls at night—we’re a brand new store!—but no… a girl closed alone tonight who just got out on the sales floor a few days ago. Again, you’d think that we’d at least commonly have overlapping shifts at first: this is also not the case. So I’m leaving frantic scribbled notes for them for their training and staying half an hour late literally every day, going into overtime every shift/week staying late to explain things. I want time to get myself organized and to create systems/binders for things and to get really familiar with reports and to maybe even get a head start on replenishment and price changes, etc.; well now he wants me there only 15 mins before opening.
We were thrown in while everyone—including myself—was still shaky at best working the MLS apps. he doesn’t seem to get that the fulfillment queue thing will not be down to single digits from the 700something it started out with earlier this week. I got it down to low hundreds and he’s still going to be pissed tomorrow, I just know it.
We’ve gone 50% over expected sales goals in the brief period we’ve been open and have had barely any people staffed, and different managers give different explanations that conflicted at times for working MLS stuff that took me forever to parse through to figure out what was actually correct.
I’ve felt myself stress so much from the moment we started sorting truck & putting things in our store before opening because these issues and more began to become apparent and it became clear to me that he wouldn’t consider my input or work with me much to meet in the middle. This has actually created moments of real scatterbrained-ness where I lose my zebra for a few and stuff. I hate it: I started out strong and now I feel resentful and anxious.
From what I’ve heard, we may get more payroll hours soon to match our sales being so high, but it really pisses me off, quite frankly, that I can’t manage this store the way I need to even within the original parameters and be able to train up my new staff right. I can’t schedule myself the way I need (even on a short term basis!) to be at my best and I’m the one who will also get confronted about it… by the very same dude who set us all up for failure mind you.
Idk how to approach him. Did your Kohls mgmt withhold any of the powers that are supposed to be yours? Did that change? Is it wrong to be annoyed about it (actually, I know it’s not: especially because he won’t fix these issues with scheduling etc himself) or is this actually normal? Did they finally see the light of how different expectations need to be with Sephora and kohls, especially while brand new employees at a brand new store? If so, how? How should I handle this? Gonna try to sit down with him Tuesday.
