Is $499 a good deal for this combo kit?

I think this is a terrible deal. Those are all the most ancient, brushed, and under powered versions of tools they make. There is only 1 brushless tool that's up to date and that's the impact wrench. This kit only comes with 2 3.0 batteries and the sawzall, circ saw, blower, and sander will eat those up in less than 5 minutes, those tools are pretty much not usable with those batteries. That impact and drill combo hasn't been made in the last 10 years, its the cheapest most underpowered impact drill and driver they made and they are brushed. While it will take a little effort there are several ways you could get higher capacity batteries and newer full sized brushless versions of these tools for not much more.
Have to agree here
If you have no repeat tools then these are all great light weight options. That Sawzall isn't great but the rest will do 98% of what you ask of it.
It's absolute garbage. My most hated Makita tool.
I love it for pvc and copper due to the size, shape, and reach. But for what ever reason it sucks on wood, mine couldn't even cut a 2x4.
Not a bad price at all.
This is a really decent kit for reasonable price. For your purposes, I’d grab it.
I bought a similar set ten years ago for diy homeowner stuff. It worked well for me. I have no regrets on the purchase and I have heavily used the tools. I tossed the flash and sold the speaker that came with my set. None of the tools have given up on me yet. So I'd say it's great for diy
I got it for 399 and am happy. People will tell you they’re underpowered but it’s all been fine for homeowner stuff. The 3/8 impact kind of sucks though, I couldn’t get it to remove lug nuts torqued to 100 lbs even though people on YouTube have done it
the saw is pretty good, everything else is fairly suboptimal. its like they threw all the tools they couldnt sell in a box. not to say its a bad drill, or impact, or anything like that, its just theres better ones for not much more
Lotta people are going to say go brushless. If you're a homeowner/hobbyist brushed is fine. You can even replace the brushes yourself when they wear out. Personally, I'd say that's a fine deal. I mean shit two batteries is like $180 alone.
In Hungary this would cost 1000 USD, seems like a good price to me
If u really want this kit u can wait for sales on Amazon and home depot. It always drops to $399 several times a year.
Looks good to me.
Do you need tools or want tools? Like you want an impact wrench and impact driver?
Depends on your diy projects. Personally I’d go brushless and sacrifice a couple tools for a slightly smaller kit to keep it in a similar price range. I understand this is for diy usage but brushed tools just don’t cut it. The 3 a/h batteries aren’t great either. I bought brushed tools as an apprentice and immediately regretted it a year or so later watching everybody around me using brushless tools that performed much better. Ended up repurchasing all of the brushed tools in brushless, which meant I had actually wasted more money in the end anyways.
Probably a decent price for what you get, but then again all of those are older variants of the tools and you don’t need half of them in the first place
Good deal!
You really have no idea how cheap you get things in the states, that money buys you 2 tools with no batteries in the UK...
It's a steal! I bought the same kit months ago and they worked. Don't listen too much to macho Redditors. You ain't gonna open up a shop if you do that's plenty enough. There are fools who just buy only the flag ship tools but rarely use them to their fullest.
I disagree. I think I’d rather have better quality tools for slightly more. I just bought a few Makita tools and considered this kit but honestly the one I went with was better bang for buck, and I got nicer tools. If you really need the add ons and already have brushless drill and impact and bigger batteries I’d say go for it, but as someone who takes pride in their stuff I would be more selective.
I bought it a month ago for $399 so it’s not the best it could be
I bought this kit for $390 a couple weeks ago. Everything is good. Sold off the impact driver and sawzall and bought some slightly better ones. I could not figure out how to operate that sawzall comfortably. The impact seemed fine but I’ll be using that a lot so went with brushless.
Cost wise its a good deal, but i think you'd outgrow much of the tools there pretty quickly. I would pass on this kit and look at others.
The LED flashlight is a waste, the blower i can only assume isn't going to get much use in a DIY setting, the impact wrench is 3/8 drive rather than 1/2inch. The impact driver isn't one of the compact versions, which is you're getting a lower powered driver like that then you really should be getting thr compact version as it'll be useful forever, because you sacrifice power for tool agility in tight spaces, but that driver is both weak and big. Alot of tools but only 2 batteries and only 3Ah each. There seems to be basically a few decent tools there but then the kit is padded with alot of junk like flashlight, bag, blower, orbital sander, stuff that ordinarily you wouldn't buy, but since its in a kit you'll get it. But don't forget you're still paying for it
I will say that the blower is great for blowing dust and debris out from under my furniture
I use that blower for my: car after a wash, decks, dogs, and stoking my fire pit.
It has its uses for sure.
Orbital sander and blower are plenty useful. Even the flashlight for a diyer who doesn’t have other lighting solutions might be handy now and again. The issue for me would be investing in outdated brushed tools. Even for diy use I just think an extra $300 bucks or so even with a couple less tools is well worth it in the long run. The tools could last 15 years. It’s a small price to pay

Thank you. I just started doing research on tools. I didn’t know the difference between brushless and brushed.
You absolutely don't need brushless. Don't spend extra trying to get all bushless tools. Makita have tons of absolutely solid brushed tools.
My suggestion is buy a kit that has a combi drill, an impact driver, and comes with 2 or more batteries + charger. You can usually get it for 200-250. That is a solid foundation and should be enough for 99% of DIY jobs, and if it turns out you really need another tool, buy it separately.
