How is OMIG?

I am interviewing for OMIG and I am confident I’ll get the job. I haven’t heard much about the agency but from what I see, it appears a lot of people retire from them as opposed to leaving. Has anyone worked with OMIG? How is it?

I currently work in OMIG and enjoy it. My unit is definitely a typical laid back dont-work-too-hard kind of office. Which has been a bit of an adjustment for me but everyone I work with is really nice and legitimately caring. My unit manager was on top of getting me a promotional position right after my probation and we're already talking about the next bump we can do.

This is great to hear, thank you.

I would suspect it would depend on what the job was, and who you were reporting to. I personally know somebody who left due to the over micromanagement.

Absolutely depends on the job and who you’re reporting to.

I work at OMIG, and I'm very happy there. But like others have said, I'm sure it's unit dependent like anywhere else. Also, this cannot be undervalued with state jobs... FREE PARKING.

I’ve worked in HR for a few different agencies over my career - not specifically familiar with OMIG’s office at present but can confirm that HR in general is where you’ll learn best how to navigate the system and your career! Best of luck! You can then join me and u/ScubaCC as Civil Service advice fairies on the sub. 😉

Aww! I didn’t think anyone noticed me!

A friend of mine worked there as an auditor in a traineeship position. As I was a reference for her, I got to hear the director talk up a great game as if everyone is family (red flag). Turned out to be anything but true, proper training not conducted for her and her coworkers in her unit who were also in traineeships. A really toxic environment without any guidance or communication for those trying to learn the job.

I interviewed with them recently and got a very BAD vibe. Might've just been that office or maybe just the day, but that among other things about the position itself is telling me I def shouldn't take the position if they offer it.

What position did you interview for if you don’t mind sharing?

Medicaid integrity specialist trainee/ MIST

You made the right choice.

Edit: Sounds like you're making the right choice in trusting your gut instinct.

Word lol I figured. I already work in the state at another agency as a new trainee and that interview made me appreciate my unit a whole lot more. I was told during the interview OMIG is not offering any wfh for trainees (so 2 full years in the office), meanwhile my current unit is giving me wfh as soon as I can get the required training and tech set up.

good on you for trusting your gut instincts

I work at OMIG and it extremely variable by unit and by supervisor. I enjoy where I am in the agency, but would be unhappy in other units I am sure, or even under different supervisors in my current unit.

Medicaid is a bear of a program and if your position is directly related to auditing Medicaid providers, you will be doing a lot of learning how Medicaid is adjudicated yourself - this isn't really because people don't want to train you, it's because Medicaid is insanely convoluted and changing every single day.

I was thinking of putting in for the Chief’s position for investigations. So I’m glad to see all the replies about what it’s like to work for them. I have a friend who worked for them like I said. Left a few years back.

What office? Albany? New York City? I think the different office have a very different experience from one another
