General question to those who only smoke a few favorites. Why? As someone who works in a cigar bar full time I have to try everything so I can talk to people about them. I honestly couldn’t imagine smoking the same thing repeatedly.

Reliability, consistency, knowing your going to smoke a good cigar every time. I’m a creature of habit. Having said that, I’m not afraid of trying new cigars. I tend to dip my toe in the unknown once a week or so.

Nothings worse than spending good money on a stick you don't like

I branch out here and there, but I only buy my favorites in boxes. I can’t justify spending box money on stuff I’m not sure I’ll enjoy.

blazesdemons•

I second this. I'll buy a 5 pack on something I've heard is good. I've bought singles and had them be bad so I like to get them a few tries before I make a decision.

4
MrDoomEngineOP•

That’s 100% understandable.

I don't think anyone recommends buying a box without trying one that's crazy

BiggieRickk[ Pennsylvania ]•

Same deal with me, I work in one of the largest cigar stores in America. The options are abundant, and it's not like I'm more than an hours drive from plenty of other stores that have TAA/PCA stuff either. I love variety, but I understand why people mostly smoke what they already know they like.

That being said, it's a very rare occasion for me to smoke the same cigar more than once a day at the most. I usually buy 4-6 five packs of cigars I know I want to smoke for the next few days, and then buy around ten singles of cigars I want to try or that I really enjoy but are expensive.

5
MrDoomEngineOP•

Yes I have boxes of stuff I know I like but I work also in one of the largest cigar stores in the country and i make sure I try everything that comes through the door. I’ve rarely found cigars I deem bad. I can literally only think of about 6 out of thousands

2
BiggieRickk[ Pennsylvania ]•

See, that I disagree with a bit. I've had plenty of cigars I thought were bad. Not even just not my thing, but plain bad cigars.

4
SmokeHimInside•

Yeah but do you get to try sticks for free? We don’t. That’s why we stick to reliable ones for the most part.

3
Big_Bernielomax•

Unfortunately I feel like I’m in a niche that aligns with what you’re saying. I have a bunch of davidoffs and Fuentes, but don’t have enough duplicates to get great variety (or at least enough repeats to give better assessments) I have tried stepping outside the box with some Caldwells, PG’s, and Bolivars but really need to step outside my comfort zone to try something that’s a true sleeper. Any recommendations? 🙏🏽

Big_Bernielomax•

I will say that being an original Connecticutter, foundations’s Olmec was amazing, as were the David and tabernacle but still learning to grow as an enthusiast!

2
MrDoomEngineOP•

The new Espinosa taa 2023 blows Olmec out of the water. It’s phenomenal.

Warped and illusione foundation and padron are all aganorsa tobacco. Aganorsa makes some of the best stuff out there.

1†

Uh what lol

4
SmokeInMyI•

I was under the impression that Padron is vertically integrated, growing a lot of their own tobacco. That said, I know a lot of people say they buy San Andres for wrapper

2
Big_Bernielomax•

I’ll have to look for it… for educational purposes of course! Lol

I like variety but i imagine it’s the same reason ppl order the same thing everytime they go to Starbucks. We’re creatures of habit.

3
recycledsteel88•

I’m not afraid to try new ones and i do every now and then, but I have 6 or 7 that I really like and know what I’m getting. For me it’s about consistency and reliability.

The best example I can give is when I come home from work after a really long stressful week I want to sit on the porch and smoke something that I know is gonna be good, I’d be pissed if I sat down to try to relax and end up with something that sucks lol.

3
MrDoomEngineOP•

I get that. I guess I don’t have that perspective because it’s my job.

2
Intercaust[ Oregon ]•

Im on a mission to try every cigar on the planet.

3
Peacock684•

I unfortunately live fairly far from a decent smoke shop that I can buy singles at, so I resort to ordering online and usually end up buying g boxes because it is cheaper. It is easy to take a chance and spend $10-20 bucks on a cigar you might not like. It is a lot harder to spend $200+ on a box of cigars you might not like.

That being said, any time I am in a smoke shop/cigar bar, I try to buy one I have never had before.

2
FreedomDirty5•

I’ve tried quite a few and I’m not against trying something new, but I know what I like. I get a sampler from small batch every month and will listen to recommendations at my local B&M but when it comes to buying boxes or bundles I go with something I know I like.

2
FeeFiFooFunyon•

In a cigar bar I try new things on occasion but really I fall back on a top 5. I am the same with alcohol.

2
StumblinPA•

If I can ask a practical question? How does the pricing work for an employee smoking sticks in the shop? Is that part of your pay, do you get them at cost, something else?

2
Dan_Berg•

I briefly worked at a lounge, and it's probably different than OP, but we were allowed 1 free $10 or under stick per 6 hour shift and anything over had to pay the difference, and any extra cigars on the same shift and days off we got a 15% discount. We could get another freebie with same rules for double shifts. Unfortunately I could only work there a few weeks because it was part time and I wasn't really available the hours they needed someone there since I was at my main job. They did let me continue to smoke in the lounge for free after they couldn't give me hours though, so that was cool.

6
MrDoomEngineOP•

I’m actually legally not allowed to answer that.

Edit: I’m not being cheeky I literally had to sign an nda.

I like getting 5 packs or so of new cigars to try out new blends, but I like having some favorites in boxes that I can keep in stock

2
Odd-Fold9929•

Picked up a 5 bundle pack of Gurkha Ghost. Found out that they're damn good and decided to cough up the money for the 21pk .

1
amerninja38•

I've done something similar once or twice. I really don't think getting singles, especially from online, really gives a blend a chance. Of course, then it sucks if a blend isn't that good, now you've got 3 or 4 sticks you don't really want to clear out of the humidor

2
JustSomeAudioGuy•

For me, living north of the border, I can really only enjoy between May and October, and I don’t smoke everyday. I like my faves and don’t want to waste an opportunity on something I don’t like.

2
TheRealRevBem•

Frankly, I think I have tried a large enough sample to know I like Cubans and new world maduros. There are only so many of each and I have found my favorites of each.

2
Angelvsburgh•

In my home country there is a saying: 'better to stick to the well known rubbish one than sampling a new, promising good one'.

Jokes aside, when I go to shops, I buy one of everything. If I'm going to cigar lounges I go for what I know

1
flstcjay•

I have a couple daily drivers that I smoke all the time. I buy them by the box or bundle. The rest of my collection is generally smoked when I have leisure time to sit quietly and throughly enjoy a higher end offering.

1
MrDoomEngineOP•

You know that’s an alien concept to me. When I’m at home or alone or just chilling I have absolutely no desire to smoke a cigar. But I smoke like 4 to 5 at work 4 days a week

1
9eezer[ Arkansas ]•

Wild. I'm polar opposite. I smoke at home, alone usually, 90% of the time. My wife or daughter might be with me poolside or on the porch but that is about it. There is only one lounge in my town and it is primarily a bar, cigar lounge second with a limited and pedestrian selection. I only smoke there once in a blue moon. Even then, I read a book and keep to myself.

xxworm42082xx•

I don't have go to sticks...I mean I do but I'm more of a brand guy. Dtt, drew estate, foundation, ect just never let me down

1
MrDoomEngineOP•

I get that. But make sure your looking into providers and blenders more than brands it’ll help you follow a path through different companies.

1
xxworm42082xx•

Yeah I have a fairly nice selection and enjoy a range of cigars, it just seems some brands do not got the mark for me. My father is a good example. I'm glad folks like em I just don't enjoy them. Arturo fuente is another. Like I said not bad, I just don't find myself going back for more like I do with others

3
MrDoomEngineOP•

Everyone is different. I like most fuente but my father is hit Or mostly miss for me. Perdomo is another one as well as most altadis products and cao (excluding basins). But whatever brings you happiness I’m all for.

1
xxworm42082xx•

Yes sir...I just discovered Roma craft and I'm enjoying them so far

1

I’ve been married 8 years

1
Sierra_Bravo915•

Well, it was a play on settling on one woman, but apparently I'm the only one that gets my jokes. 🙃

2
MrDoomEngineOP•

Oh it went right over my head lol. Well I guess I’m faithful to my wife but not my cigar brands lol

2
AccidentalDemolition[ United States ]•

With beer I'm very much like you. With cigars I flip flop. I generally smoke a few staples, but try a new one every so often. I keep my regular smokes for stressful days and special occasions, but on my personal time I'll try new ones.
