"What's your first name?" "... Prominent."
It's a shame the trial is after the election. Something of this political nature should have an earlier trial so all voters are aware.
Are abuse accusations a political thing? Unless he is actually standing for election, why would it matter?
Political as those standing for election were associated with him by forming policies. In an election year I think transparency there is important.
Doesn't matter what party it is, it's something the people should know and for the party leader to address.
Guilty by association isn't reasonable. Polices need to fall or stand on their merit.
All for transparency, but this is a legal matter and that takes priority over the political implications for now.
You might say it's not reasonable, but from a campaigning aspect it will definitely make a difference.
Very few people vote for policy based on how good the policy actually is in my experience.
If he's found to be guilty, it'll probably damage the party he was involved with.
There are some who call him
must be the act party president
Labour party had some issues with their youth arm awhile ago. And Act have had also had complaints made against someone prominent in their party by someone in the youth arm. Not sure about National?

This isn't among the youth branch.
Thanks. I wondered if it was a senior party member abusing someone in the youth party.
Name secrecy up to and during the trial is fair enough IMO, otherwise if found not found guilty the association could ruin his life anyway.
Name suppression ends the moment a guilty verdict is issued, though.
His identity is an open secret. This article pops up when you Google the man's name on Google images
Ah libertarians

Is he legit 'prominent' would you say?
Wow. Just found it. That shirt is unmistakable.
Starts googling politicians I think might be predators lol
Would you mind sharing his name?
Breaking name suppression rules is a big no go.
Whattabout if they just give the initials?

“Name suppression ends the moment a guilty verdict is issued, though.”
If they are convicted and they appeal the verdict, should they get an extension of name suppression?
This is a really good point, and not one I'd considered in my reactive comment.
On one hand, no, you've been convicted and just like how you won't be allowed out of prison while the appeal goes on, you also bear the punishment of being named as guilty party (unless this impacts the victims of course). The natural counter to this is that you're publicly exonerated should you win the appeal
I think you can actually get bail pending an appeal. Section 54 of the Bail Act 2000.
Absolutely agree.
Though unfortunately in NZ it just casts doubt on everyone else until they’re named…. And most people have connected the dots anyway.
Interestingly the person speculated as the accused hit out after being “wrongly” accused by an American media outlet; which has been reported - if suppression gets lifted & it is him what a dickhead.
That sounds seductively simple, but for some crimes, like sex offenses, it’s a big impediment to getting to the truth.
Is this not the purpose of the courts?
