Questions about colonial history

Hey there, I'm just a white "kid" (26) and after some years in the trade and learning about other people's education in other countries, I've been questioning my education from northern Ontario. A few teachers made sure to make the point that it's ultimately the victors who write the history books.

After recently moving to NB, I didn't realize there's still tension between the English and French, maybe not as much as Quebec but still surprising to me. What I'm mostly curious about is the relations each had with the indigenous tribes. While each claim the other is arrogant and wrong, I wanted to know if there is any remaining knowledge on who did what. I'm aware the English were terrible with their "schooling" but I'm curious if the French were also as imposing on their beliefs or more willing to understand your ways?

I'm not looking to point fingers or anything, I just think it's ridiculous how the 2 fight when it seems they've both had parts in colonizing Canada.

Side question, was there a name for the land before people mistook the meaning of kanata?
