I watched him twitch and convulse under the merciless electrical current. I finally relented as he fell unconscious, and I took a few deep breaths to calm myself. The room fell silent, save for the incessant crying from the exterminator.
“Do you want to know why you’re still alive?” She let out a beep of fear and surprise as I turned my attention unto her. She disgusted me, a sniveling mess who so impassively ignored the very same cries of pain she lets out shamelessly.
I stepped in front of her, kneeling down to bring myself level with her singular eye. “Because you have not yet atoned, I want you to help someone as you didn’t help Gregory.” She flinched as I said his name.
“I-I’m sorry..I-i-”.
“I..I..I.” I mimicked her, “I know you’re sorry, and that is only the first step.” I grabbed her head, keeping it still much like I did earlier. Her eye was sunken, yet wide with terror as I spelled out her fate to her. I let go of her head, sighing softly as I stood up and pulled a water bottle off of a nearby shelf.
I took a sip from the bottle before holding it to her bloodied lip and letting her drink for the first time in nearly 3 days. She still flinched from my contact, but greedily drank the water regardless. I let her finish the entire bottle, and tossed it aside.
She stared with an exhausted despair on her tearstained face, and I met her gaze with similar exhaustion. I know that a saner person would’ve felt pity for such a pathetic looking Venlil, but I didn’t. I only felt a simmering anger, I felt my breathing hitch and falter as I was reminded yet again of my own personal ‘Why?’.
“You don’t even know how much I hate you.” I clenched my teeth and swallowed those emotions for the time being. I broke away from the eye contact, and plucked a small ammonia ampule from the cart beside her.
I stepped in front of Daniel and crushed the ampule before waving it under his nose. Within the second he gasped and wrinkled his nose as he woke up. He looked up at me, still as angry as before he fell unconscious.
“Good Waking, Daniel.” I forced some cheer into my voice as he grimaced at me for the comment.
“I’ll kill you! You fucking monster!” He yelled with admirable conviction and that only irked me further.
“It takes one to know one, Daniel. You are a killer just like me.” He somehow seemed surprised, and I wondered if he ever bothered to check the kill count.
“But this isn’t one of my normal jobs, Daniel. This is entirely personal.” I grabbed his broken hand and squeezed it, making him wince and groan in pain.
“But don’t worry, All of my patients have redeemed themselves in the end.” I smiled at him, “But first let's get some things straight.”
“I'm not a hero, and neither are you. I may be a necessary evil, you are an impulsive evil.”
“You’re fucking insane.” He retorted
“No, I know what I am doing and what I’ve done.” I took the insult in stride, It cuts a bit different than ‘predator’ but the idea is the same.
I scowled, unable to suppress my discontent with my own thoughts. None of my previous patients survived, and I’ve killed for so much less. I took solace in the fact most of my ‘check-ups’ were little more than glorified assassinations. High-profile targets for retribution, made into examples for the cause rather than equal justice.
“With that out of the way.” I huffed, clearing my head as I leaned awkwardly against the wheeled cart. “It's time to treat those delusions you’ve got Daniel.” Despite his overwhelming anger his eyes flashed with concern.
I stopped leaning on the cart, and wrapped my still slightly shaking hand around the grip of a power drill. I turned it on and captured the attention of both my patients by holding down the trigger, producing a loud whir.
“Think of this like an empathy test, I know you’ve seen ‘em.” I smiled more genuinely this time, and turned to look at Hethek. She shrank away from me weakly, exhausted from the days of abuse. Though, credit where it's due these exterminators are tough cookies.
I grabbed her hair and gripped tightly, holding her head against the headrest as she started begging.
“N-no more, please PLE-” I cut her short as I stuffed the drill bit into her mouth and practiced xeno-dentistry. I held down the trigger, the drill bit quickly digging into flesh as I pushed it into her gums. She began screeching and struggling as her teeth resisted the drill, slowly chipping away before the drill sank deeper. I grunted as I pushed the bit down through her jaw bone, the hole gushing orange as I ripped the drill free.
Hethek was whimpering and trembling as blood dripped onto her chest, soaking into the wool. Her ragged shaky breaths could barely be heard over Daniel screaming at me. I tuned it out and stepped toward him, forcing the drill bit into his mouth. He shut up quickly as his eyes widened in abject fear.
“It hurts to watch, I can promise it hurts much more for her to feel her flat teeth twisting, cracking, and breaking as her gums get stuck in my drill.” I depressed the trigger lightly, the gentle spinning not nearly enough to do damage. But it smeared the orange blood onto Daniel’s tongue just fine. I removed the drill from his mouth, and he dry-heaved as he tried spitting out the blood.
“Does the taste remind you of someone, Hm?” I wiped the drill bit clean of his saliva with my sleeve. Daniel finally vomited, splattering his lunch and the beer we shared onto himself and the floor. He retched a few more times, panting heavily as he spit out the puke in his mouth.
“Please…please don't hurt him.” He hung his head, not even bothering to look at me as he begged. He began shaking as he broke down and began crying.
“What the matter, Daniel?” I spat, anger rising in my voice as I’ve gotten exactly what I want from him. “Can’t handle a taste of your own fucking medicine?” I pulled the trigger just to threaten him as I continued. “You are an ungrateful cowardly piece of shit.”
He kept trying to speak, but I interrupted him with the Drill repeatedly.
“I get my hands dirty because I truly hate the monsters I deal with, I want them to feel a fraction of the pain they caused others to feel.”
“You? You just want to have someone, anyone to make you feel useful don't you?” My voice was filled with anger, and I continued. “To be part of something bigger, change the world in some way so you're not forgotten under the deluge of new tragedies?”
He sat there sniveling as I took a shot in the dark and tried unraveling his insecurities with an educated guess. Judging by him only sobbing harder and shaking his head in denial, I was probably right.
“I see myself in you, which is why I hate you so fucking much.” I sighed, feeling the beginnings of tears form in my eyes before I blinked them away.
“But I’m jealous of you, which is why I said you’re ungrateful. You’ve got someone who you apparently really care about. Since you cried for days on the forums when he almost killed himself because of your actions.”
“I’m sure he cares about you as well, so you’re gonna learn to act like it.” I removed the drill bit and exchanged it for a flat drill bit.
“And I’m going to spend all night drilling this lesson into your head until you learn.” I reached over and pulled on Hethek’s ear, forcing her to look up at me.
“Get it? Because I’ve got a drill?” I dryly explained my own joke, and expectedly received no laughter.
“P-phhease..” She weakly begged, her voice tired and broken.
“You’ll have to speak up.” I spat out as I revved the drill, and slowly inched the drill bit closer to her remaining eye.
She kept begging until the very final moment…
