How can I advance?
Looking for advice here because I don't really have anyone to refer to in my personal life. I'm in my thirties, married, with a toddler.
I really want my child to have a future... but as things are, financially it looks like a dead end for my family. My wife and I combined (in the past) pulled in approx 90-100k (the average rent where I live is 2,700 for a single bedroom family). I can't get rid of my car expenses either because I need it for work. This year has been extremely rough as she went on maternity leave (one year off with 55% of her usual pay) and is now back in school. All of our savings have been depleted and we have accumulated debt.
The first mistake I made was never completing any post secondary education. After highschool, I joined a skilled trade with a company that a family friend owns. I had the assumption that if his company did well, that I would also do well. He seemed like he was doing quite well then and is now doing extremely well for himself (enough to take half year long vacations). This company only had 2 employees at the time I joined.
Forward to approximately 18 years later, I'm making mid 30s per hour with no benefits, pension, or compensation for business expenses (gas and parking - sometimes visiting multiple sites per day). This company now has 10 employees. Apart from pricing, bidding, and finding work, there are only a couple of us that pretty much project manage jobs (on top of taking the lead in the grunt work) from start to finish. I''m certified in my field but this skilled trade is not red seal. Retaining certification or even finding clients depends on who you're employed with and who you know. There are a few companies that are in this trade where I am as it is relatively unheard of.
My career feels like a dead end to me. I''ve tried negotiating with my employer, but have not met with any positive response. The only upside I see in my life is that my wife has almost completed school for a post grad management course (and of course my kid). Her student LOC is the only thing keeping us afloat but even that is dwindling.
Any advice for someone who feels ready to quit in life? How do I even get ahead? Should I take on more debt to start my career all over again? I don't even want to be rich I just want to be able to save some money for my family's future.
Edit: I can't move to a different company and most of the owners know each other, I had a friend apply and he was swiftly let go afterwards when the boss found out.

Yes you can. It may not be in the exact same industry, but think about your skills more generally and I'm sure there are multiple jobs you're well-qualified for. You've painted yourself into a corner if you can only do one job. Get yourself out of the corner. You've been there for 18 years, that's way too long for a job that doesn't appreciate you. You need to get out and go somewhere else.
